These polymer clay nipple sculptures are part of the @urbannipple project by art student Michelle Kometz.
Michelle has studies gender construction in social media and wrote about female artists on Instagram and the fourth wave of feminism. After studying the representation of women in film, advertisement, art and literature,Michelle has explored the idea of making a different image of women.
@urbannipple is an intermediate activist project that fights against the inequality in the Instagram community guidelines which forbids women to post pictures that show their nipples. Michelle has installed her female nipple sculptures and stickers in the urban space encouraging people to take pictures and post them to social media.
Through a sticker they can tag the account and notify Michelle, who will repost their pictures on the urbannipple page. Michelles intention is for the female nipple to become a part in everyday life and finds its way to Instagram. The account offers an easy humorous start in the world of feminist art, feminism and activism. It informs the followers about the newest feminist literature, exhibitions and discussions.
Michelle says of the project: The project is initiated by me but it can only exist with the cooperation with pedestrians, exhibition visitors or other audiences. They become a part of the project by posting the sculptures, stickers and Mosaic and help to built awareness for sexism on social media platforms and thus every day life. In some cases their pictures of the installation get banned and they witness sexism themselves and they feel the urge to fight against that.
