One sad girl business
Everything I create is inspired by my favourite sad girls who’ve protested the idealised feminism with the power of sadness: Hannah Wilke, Ana Mendieta, Eva Hesse, Sylvia Plath, Lana Del Rey, Audrey Wollen, Melissa Broder...
Let's admit it, being a girl is hard. Society paints girlhood as this shiny, fun, and empowering experience, urging us to stay positive, be strong, and smash the patriarchy. But somehow, there’s no space for our sadness in that narrative. It’s too personal, too individual, too “shallow.” The truth is, most days, it’s not fun or cool to be a girl. Most days, I just want to stay home and cry.
And then I think of what Hannah Wilke said: "Why not universalize the 'personal' and make it the subject of our art?"
I'm just trying to create something that speaks to all the women who have this same experience.
