Sona, maker of handmade crochet toys, reflecting on the juggle of running a business and how watching her Grandma do hand embroidery inspired her own creative path.
Was there a mother figure in your life who influenced you learning any of the skills you use in your business?
Yes, definitely—my mom has been a huge influence. She was always making something with her hands, whether it was sewing, embroidery, or simple DIYs around the house. Watching her create things from scratch with so much patience and love really sparked my own curiosity for handmade crafts. She didn’t formally “teach” me crochet, but her creativity and resourcefulness laid the foundation for how I approach my work today. I think that sense of joy and pride in making something beautiful by hand really came from her.
Did your mother (or Aunt, Grandma, mother figure) inspire you to take the path to starting your business or creative project?
Yes, absolutely. My mum—and the women in my family in general—have always been creative in their own ways. Whether it was my mom sewing clothes, my aunt crocheting, or my grandma doing hand embroidery, creativity was just part of everyday life growing up. They never called it a “business” or a “project,” but they made things with so much love and care, and that really stayed with me. It definitely inspired me to start something of my own, where I could take those roots and build something meaningful and creative from them.
How do you juggle motherhood with running a business? What does the reality of that look like?
As a mother, balancing business and motherhood can be a beautiful chaos—but my daughter has been the heart of The Yarn Tale from the very beginning. She’s not just my inspiration; she’s been incredibly supportive and surprisingly innovative, always coming up with fresh ideas and keeping me updated on trends.
She even has a knack for marketing, and honestly, she’s the wind beneath my wings. Every amigurumi I make is filled with love, and watching her cuddle and squish them with such joy reminds me why I do what I do. It’s not always easy, but it’s always meaningful.
When you think the ‘WHY’ of your business, how does being a mum impact this?
When I think about the why behind my business, being a mum plays a huge role. I wanted to create something meaningful and flexible—something that allowed me to be present for my daughter while also pursuing my own passions. It’s important to me that she sees her mum as someone with dreams, creativity, and purpose.
Every amigurumi I make is crafted with care over several days, using fine-quality yarns and thoughtful embellishments. They’re more than just toys—they’re heirloom pieces, made to be cherished, hugged, and passed down. That love and intention behind each one is what I want to share with others too—so that every mum can experience a bit of that joy and magic.
