In the 1800’s women fought hard to qualify and work as doctors. Hostile medical cartels barred women’s access to education and professional medical training, but women persisted.
Elizabeth Blackwell qualified as the first woman doctor in America in 1849. Elizabeth Garrett qualified as the first woman doctor in the UK in 1870, and Constance Stone was registered as Australia’s first woman doctor in 1890.
These women of science broke through gender barriers to qualify and practice medicine and they all established hospitals for women, run exclusively by women, adopting the slogan Pro Feminis A Feminis.
The Queen Victoria Hospital for women opened in 1899 and was the world’s third Pro Feminis A Feminis hospital, providing professional health care to women for more than 100 years.
The Queen Victoria Women’s Centre is in the only remaining building of the hospital. It too adopts the slogan Pro Feminis A Feminis (For women By women).

We want you to love your purchase. We offer returns for change of mind on all full‑priced items within 30 days of purchase.

You are responsible for return postage costs. These are non‑refundable and will be deducted from your refund if applicable. For items over $75, we recommend using a trackable service or purchasing shipping insurance.
